    very good “Spectacularly beautiful location”
    9

Overnight cruises are all the rage. We found one night sufficient even though the place is (almost!) as breathtaking as the bus ride to and from Hanoi! Plenty of tour boats but we were lucky to be in a small boat (two of us in a mixed multinational group of about 12 booked through Kangaroo Cafe Hanoi) rather than a multi-storey floating hotel. A very knowledgeable and helpful guide vastly enhanced the experience and the crew cooked and served very good meals. Kayaking stop for those inclined, cold beer at reasonable prices for those not, and stops to climb lookouts and explore caves (amazing, in Lord of the Rings class!).

very good “Don't expect VIP service”
    10

We saw great photo's of the junk on which we would stay one night, and to be sure about the best quality, we booked the VIP comfort level, the highest out of 3 levels (and prices). It was all well organised in terms of timing, bus travel, etc. but we got onto a fairly ordinary junk, with less than acceptable bathroom facilities. We had a room for three, and only two of us had a shower that was more or less warm. The next morning the shower was still cold. Mind you it is quite chilly in Halong Bay in December. The tour guide was helpful to run us through the various events (cave visit, kayaking, drop off in Cat Ba, etc.), but did not know anything about Halong Bay. Several in our group really wanted to know a bit about the geology, history, mythology, and even what we were going to do next! None of that, we were basically treated like a flock of sheep, who simply had to follow the programme. All meals are included in the tour price, except your drinks. Well the drinks on board were exceptionally expensive for Vietnam, and wine is only available by the bottle. We were lucky that we had a Vietnamese couple in our group (living in the US), because the staff on board did not speak a word of English. Bottomline? Halong Bay is already destroyed by the massive tourism there and we were there even off season! There are about 500 junks on the Bay and wherever you go, you meet masses of tourist groups. Looking at the resort developments in Cat Ba, it is going to be much worse in the future. I had looked forward to Halong Bay as one of the (if not THE) highlights of our trip through Vietnam, but honestly, my advice is to look up photographs on the internet from the times that it was quiet there, and to enjoy those. Going there now is a waste of time and money in my view. Unless you like to be treated like a sheep. And as a Kiwi I don't!

very good “Simply beautiful, but with qualifications”

This is an amazing area well worth a visit. We booked an overnight cruise with Paradise Cruises and they were simply excellent - very high quality accomodation, food and service, The brickbats were for expensive onboard drinks and ordinary trips - the cave and fishing village are best avoided (especially given the number of other boats crowding around). The boat moored overnight at a very quiet location with no other boats in sight. Fabulous. Halong Bay is a large area but all the crusie boats seem to head to the same 'attractions' like moths to a lamp. A little more creativity is required here. Also I suspect Halong Bay is becoming a victim of it's own fame. Damn those tourists!!

  • www.cruisesluxuryhalong.com (8)Daithi85 MALI

very good “Could be a wonder of the world but grossly overtouristed and badly littered waters”
    9

Halong Bay's reputation sets it a hard task in meeting the expectations of visitors and we had looked forward to this trip for 4 months. We booked in advance with Sinh tourist cafe in Hoi An (the 3 day, 2 night option with a deluxe sticker slapped on it for $80) and found ourselves being dropped from Hanoi to the charming Marguerite boat. The staff there were friendly and courteous and the food, mostly local seafood, was excellent. The cabins were fantastic: clean with roomy ensuite, TV, dvd player, minibar, bowl of fruit. Our only bone to pick was at check out when they insisted we had drank three bottles of water from the minibar when we had drank one (there were only two to begin with instead of the usual four) and were a little bit stubborn about it.

very good “Halong Bay with Indochina Sail Cruise”
    9

There are just so many junks to choose for Halong Bay Cruise ranging from US$80 to US$200 but after reading the advice from trip advisor, we have decided to go ahead with Indochina Sail at the rate of US$189 per person for 2D1N. I must say we were very impressed with the service provided by Indochina sail. Everything was booked online directly with them and payment was safe through visa. They picked us up in a very comfortable 10 seater van and the journey was around 3.5 hours. Upon arrival, you're invited to rest at their own waiting lounge while waiting to board the junk. Their services were great and the guide speaks good English. We told them that we're celebrating our Anniversary and they have upgraded us to their deluxe cabin and a bouquet of flowers were arranged upon our arrival. We also met great friends from all over the world and the kayaking was really fun although the weather was cold. The food was also well served and I can say it's delicious! The cabin was clean and the junk was beautiful since it's relatively new (2008). If you're looking for memorable Halong Bay cruise, pay for Indochina as at the end of the trip, you will bring back a memorable trip and more friends, just like we did. Well done, Indochina Sail!
