Ginger is modern, safe, luxurious and the staff were fantastic. Use this one. It's owned by a Vietnamese businessman but the management team are Swiss and Italian. On board, we were amazed by the quality of the food. Restaurant standard and all traditional vietnamese dishes. We did the two night option - others on the boat did just one night. I would advice two nights - you get to see and do far more: canoeing etc. Great fun
The 'Ginger', a sister junk of 'Jasmine', is nicely decorated, you feel that you are going back in time to the glamorous '20s and '30s. We enjoyed staying in a smaller junk, it did not feel overcrowded and we received excellent attention and friendly service. Our family stayed 2 days and 1 night and both the teenagers and little ones enjoyed it. From the moment you arrive, you are treated wonderfully by the crew. Food was delicious and there was plenty of it (buffet lunch and breakfast, sit-down dinner). Clean, comfortable cabins with a/conditioning. The activities are very interesting: we visited a floating fishing village and caves, climbed to the top of a hill for a wonderful view of the bay, chilled on a secluded beach, and did tai chi at sunrise. Relaxing on deck was also fantastic, sipping cocktails at sunset, enjoying gorgeous views of the bay and karst rock formations, watching fishing junks pass by. Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site, after all. If you are driving (or driven) to Halong Bay from Hanoi, the 3 hour journey will give you a chance to see the rustic countryside, with rice paddies along the road and karst formations emerging as you approach the Gulf of Tonkin. Photographer's paradise!
On the advice of many friends, my husband and I spent just one night on the Ginger cruise. Given the weather was misty and cool (beautiful nonetheless), I think this was the right amount of of time. The boat and the service were wonderful. Our room was clean and comfortable and just very very nice all-around. The food was delicious. We loved the trips to a cave and especially to a fishing village. There were a total of 14 guests on the boat, and as a result the whole experience felt very intimate. Our guide, Tuan, was very kind and helpful. also, this boat and it's sister boats, Violet and Jasmine, took a slightly different route offering more of the spectacular scenery. If you are contemplating a lesser cruise, consider that this one comes with a private car to and from your hotel in Hanoi. We'd heard many harrowing stories about bus trips back and forth to Halong and weren't interested. Our driver was great, and the trip, 3 hours and 45 minutes, went very smoothly. Oh, and bring a bottle of wine!
We spent 2 days and one night on the Ginger Junk. It was much better than expected. The rooms are geat but we spent most of our time on the deck, eating in the dining room or visiting caves, fishing villages and swimming off the boat. We went in July and it was very hot and humid so it was great on the deck. The bedrooms are airconditioned and about 4 star. You could not get better on a junk. There were 13 passengers and 14 crew to look after you. Nothing is any trouble for them. They try to treat you with the ultimate respect and service. Finally you will love your time on the Ginger Junk. The maximum number of passengers is 20 and the windows in you bedroom give you a private uninterrupted view over the water.
Beautiful boat with old world charm. A trip to Ha Long Bay on the Ha Long Ginger is like stepping back in time. The boat is beautifully decorated and well equipped, the lunch on board was as good as any 5* restaurant. The bay its self is like entering a alternate planet lost in time. The bay people are happy to welcome you into their world and proud to show off their homes & families. The evening dinner in the cave was spectacular with a unique setting and top quality food. The floating islands and deep green waters makes a trip to the bay unforgettable. I would highly recommend the Ginger Junk for quality & customer service. Visited April 2011
My husand and I went on a 2 day / 1 night tour of Halong Bay on the Ginger Junk. We had a fabulous time and would definitely recommend this tour operator to other couples. The boat was spacious and extremely comfortable. I would say that the tour caters predominantly for couples and there were 8 couples on the same tour as us, making it very intimate and relaxing. Our room was lovely and the facilties were of a standard that would would expect in a 4 star hotel. Due to the nature of the accommodation, it is not possible for everyone to have a hot shower at the same time, but this didn't prove to be a problem for us. In fact the shower was excellent! The food (particularly lunch on the first day and brunch on the second) was amazing. There was such a large variety of food, all freshly prepared and delicious. The tour itself was very well organised and there are plenty of stop-offs and activities e.g. Tai chi to keep you occupied. What I particularly liked about this tour was not feeling pressured into tipping. The Ginger Junk is tour is more pricey than some of the other Halong Bay tours but it's certainly worth paying for!
